Is the Cisco 3850 Switch Feature Set Right For You?

Do you need any of the following features?

  • Integrated wireless controller – Cisco’s grand experiment – to combine wired and wireless controllers in one switch
  • 480 Gbps stacking throughput – more is always better, but at what price?
  • Quad port 10 gigabit Ethernet uplink module – do you even need 10 gig connectivity at all?
  • UPoE – Cisco’s proprietary PoE standard that can do up to 60 watts per port

If you answered “no” or “I don’t know” to the above, you are in the majority. Most networks don’t need those features.

Well, how about saving some money? Do you want that?

If you still need layer 3 (routing), stackability and redundant power supplies, how about taking a step back to Cisco’s 3750X line?

It’s a great switch family, has most of the software features of the 3850 and is just one generation older than the 3850.  There are models in the 3750X family that can do 802.3at PoE, can stack up to 9 tall and have uplink choices that range from 1 gig to 10 gig – even with NetFlow capability.  And redundant power supplies are an option on all models in the 3750X family.
