It seems that the technology industry moves at a faster pace than nearly any other. This is apparent by the rate of new technologies to market (wait, there’s a newer iPhone already?) in addition to our rate of adoption of these technologies. For perspective, here’s a look at some of the top technology trends in 1995 vs. 2015.
Yes, that’s right… you were watching Star Wars on VHS until at least 1995 (but at least you could still see the original theatrical version). Seems like yesterday, doesn’t it? Read more fun facts here.
This year, CXtec is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its equal2new® brand of certified pre-owned networking and voice hardware. As we look back on these two glorious decades, we’ve learned many lessons.
Greek philosopher Heraclitus is quoted as saying, "Change is the only constant in life" (at least according to the Interweb). In life and business, it’s important to have the ability to adapt to changes or risk being left behind. As IT professionals, we need to be constantly learning what is happening in the industry so we can make the best decisions for our businesses. In some cases, this may mean an upgrade. In others, a multi-phased approach might work best, while others still may need to maintain a legacy system. What’s imperative is the ability to justify these decisions based on what makes the most sense for your organization to succeed, rather than by a lack of understanding of available options. Take control of your technology by placing these choices in the hands of your IT superheroes, rather than manufacturers who don’t always know or care about your specific business needs.
It’s also crucial for your organization’s success that your IT provider is able to evolve as the industry changes. CXtec has been in the industry since 1978 (back when a pound of bacon was just $1.20). We’ve continuously adjusted our product offerings based on the needs of our customers and refined our equal2new certification process to meet and exceed our standards for quality.
CXtec President Peter Belyea recently discussed this concept in Telecom Reseller:
“Providers that continuously adapt to the times and offer comprehensive solutions can help organizations upgrade at a pace that makes sense for their business needs, rather than at the accelerated rate that technology changes in the industry.”

Though this quote attribution is debatable, like many Internet proclamations, it’s another lesson that can apply in life and in business. It comes as no surprise to anyone that there is often a cloud of doubt that goes along with the used IT hardware space – how do you know the equipment you’re getting is reliable? How can you depend on “used” equipment in your network? Trust us, we get it. Your network is the lifeline of your organization, and making sure it is up and running is a mission nearly as important as the quest for the Holy Grail (unless of course you’ve already got one).
Here’s the takeaway: not all used IT hardware is created equal. It’s important to do your homework when selecting your equipment vendor to ensure they make a diligent effort to give you the quality products your organization needs. [Recent research from Gartner highlights recommendations for evaluating used IT hardware providers.] Every piece of our equal2new equipment goes through a strict testing and certification process to guarantee our customers are getting a product they can depend on. We have a 99.51 percent reliability rating and our team takes pride in that process. All value added resellers do just that – add value. But do you know what that “value” is? Ask questions. A company that invests in their process upfront will provide more value long-term. Know that you only get out what you put in.
“You have to understand the value in what you're getting from someone. There's a lot of value in making the right choices and really doing the research to make sure that the place that you're buying from, you're going to get the service that you are looking for, that somebody's going to take care of you in the best way possible, and that what you're going to get from them is a high-quality piece of equipment.” –Katie Taisey, CXtec product manager, in a podcast from Enterprise Connect
Ok, maybe this isn’t as life-changing as the previous two lessons (also debatable), but still important nonetheless. Over the past 20 years, we’ve learned what truly creates joy in the life of IT professionals: toys and bacon. Our awesome equal2new troops ship out with every order to help defend the investment our customers make in their IT infrastructures. An added bonus? Once they submit photos of their troops in action, we send them a cool T-shirt. And we get to enjoy the hilarious photos. It’s a win-win.
In addition to toys, we’ve learned that IT pros typically love bacon. Why? Why not. Over 20 years, our equal2new products have saved organizations more than $817,500,000. If the money itself doesn’t do it for you… do you know what you could buy with that money? Approximately 153,262,092 pounds of bacon. No need to thank us. Just share. We’ve even aided the addiction over the years by providing our customers with bacon recipes. [Did anyone try this bacon iPhone app?] Bacon to an IT pro is like equal2new equipment to your network: part of a healthy, balanced diet.
We’ve learned a lot over the past 20 years of equal2new and are very appreciative of everything our customers have taught us. At CXtec, we’re firm believers that there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to your technology infrastructure. As technology change continues to accelerate, this will become even more evident. Remember: change is the only constant in life, you only get out what you put in, and toys + bacon = happiness. Things may get crazy along the way, but that’s what we’re here for.
Frank Kobuszewski, vice president of the technology solutions group at CXtec, summed it up best in CRN's IT Best of Breed:
“As trends such as BYOD, the cloud and Internet of Things are disrupting the status quo, we are continuing to find equal2new as a perfect solution to extend the technology lifecycle. This gives our customers peace of mind knowing they have a partner who can support them regardless of where they are in that timeline.” [Read the full article here.]
