VoIP Instant MessagingAs instant messaging (IM) becomes an increasingly popular form of communication to keep the global community united. In turn, it is not surprising that VoIP and IM would eventually merge on the same platform in the form Voice over Instant. Not only is it convenient, but VoIM is an extremely cost-effective collaboration, bringing people with wireless and mobile access together with coworkers back at the office. Aside from the obvious reduction in the cost of intercontinental phone calls, VoIM also enables users to share video, instant message, and share files. VoIM is spreading at such a rate that by 2009, there are expected to be in excess of 1 billion instant messaging accounts with applications such as AIM, Yahoo! Messenger, Windows Messenger, and Google Talk. Also in 2009, the average number of instant messages sent per day is expected to rise to 46.5 billion! Corporate-style VoIM As costs increase and security threats are more abundant than ever, companies are realizing the benefits of buying corporate-level VoIM software from vendors. Some of these packages feature computer-to-computer VoIM, while others assimilate with the IP-telephony network to cover all bases. For instance, Microsoft Office Communicator 2007 is an all-inclusive communications tool that enables employees to stay in touch via instant messaging, speech, and video. Another application, Ignite Realtime's Spark has alternative features such as group chat, telephony integration, and security. Effusia Business Messenger, another answer to improving business communications, offers the little details like user contact lists, two-way instant messaging, broadcast messages, online conferences, and file sharing capabilities. Finally, IBM Lotus Sametime vows to go above and beyond with its mobile instant messaging, built-in VoIP, video conversations, and presence awareness. |
