VoIP Implementation and Security
Preventing VoIP intrusions is a continuous, evolving process. Since hackers are constantly developing new methods to outwit VoIP security measures, it is essential that businesses remain up-to-date and remain on top of the latest trends in security breaching. Staying current allows them to implement strategies to neutralize hacker activity. Many security experts suggest that businesses incorporate VoIP protection into their overall security scheme to safeguard their entire data network. The following security measures, which can be applied to data and VoIP networks, should be taken:
- Firewall - programmed to block or let data flow into or out of a network. A firewall can be purchased as a piece of hardware or software that has been installed in a router or gateway. The firewall has the ability to analyze data exchanges, examine inbound packets, and filter packets that are arriving from potentially unsafe IP addresses or ports.
- Intrusion Detection System (IDS) - identifies any fishy activity involved with all inbound data. If anything suspicious is detected, the IDS notifies the system administrator, and that person has the wherewithal to take the appropriate action to intercept the hazard. Various vendors sell all types of remedies to solve your network difficulties. This way, a company can purchase an IDS that addresses its specific needs.
- Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) - serves the same purpose as an IDS, but instead of simply providing a warning of a problem, the IPS is designed to take care of the problem (e.g., blocking a specific IP address or user. Higher end IPS products can break down a behavioral analysis to recognize, and hopefully stop, incoming harmful data in its tracks.
- Distributed denial of service (DDoS) Protection - offered by leading telecommunications giants Cisco Systems and Symantec, this software recognizes when a hacker invasion is beginning and sorts the fraudulent service requests out from the authentic ones., allowing the latter in uninterrupted.
- Virtual Private Network - an isolated, encrypted VoIP infrastructure that is completely removed from external attacks.
Basically, VoIP security measures and security techniques used to protect an entire data network are one in the same. In general, VoIP, web, and email can all be grouped as a whole when addressing a business' security needs.
