Telephony

The use of a telephone system had an inauspicious start: the first working phones were only connected in pairs. This meant every phone only had the ability to call one other phone, leading to people purchasing multiple telephones to call multiple residences. This method was inconvenient, and soon led to the invention of the switch board. The board itself was an electronic device that allowed an operator to connect an incoming call to any other available phone lines. When people would pick up their phones they would be automatically connected to the operator, who would then switch their call to the desired destination.

Modern PBX (private branch exchange) telephone networks continue to be the most commonly purchased and trusted archetypes for communication in the business world, and the technology for these analog phone systems has advanced incredibly over the years. Individual phones are now plugged in to networks that are maintained by major service providers. Most of these networks use digital technology, which provides users with a higher level of clarity and lower rates for their phone bills.

Today, Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) telecommunications systems is an increasingly popular method of making both business and personal calls. IP telephony allows users to transmit and receive their calls digitally through the internet. These phones provide crystal clear service and the ability to make calls remotely through a wireless router. Researchers continue to seek out more advanced methods of telephony to provide even better service. Platforms such as Computer Telephony Integration (CTI) strive to fully integrate the telephone with a computer system, which would permit the computer to completely control all of the basic functions of the phone.

These new and ongoing technological achievements are bringing about a more efficient method of telecommunications, working towards a fully automated office environment and providing phone customers with more reliable and reasonably priced phone service.
