Bulk CablePlenum vs. PVC Plenum cable is designed to fit into obscure areas of a building. In construction terms, plenum is space designed for air circulation in heating and cooling systems. These spaces include the area between the structural ceiling and the suspended ceiling as well as areas in between raised floors and structural floors. These spaces pose a serious threat in the event of a fire as there are not barrier within them to restrict smoke and flames--therefore spreading the fire. Plenum cable, however, is sprayed with a special coating, often Teflon™, that acts as a flame retardant. The cable, if burned, will also emit a non-toxic smoke. PVC is often regarded as the standard patch cable. Made with a polyurethane vinyl coating, these cables are only resistant to common threats such as strain and puncture. When deciding whether to use plenum or PVC network cabling, it is important to check with federal, state and local laws as some areas specify the use of plenum cable as a safety measure. |
